CeMCOR - Findable Health Research

Overview

Decades of research, rebuilt to become more findable, approachable, and accessible. UBC's Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (CeMCOR) needed a site that fits the scale of its resources and reach. Dated website structures no longer did.

  • 75K+ global reach and 4K+ monthly engagement (as stated by CeMCOR)

  • 200+ research publications (as stated by CeMCOR)

  • 408 glossary terms, 74 resources, 54 Ask Us answers, 68 news items and 41 profiles to organise

  • 41% of surveyed visitors on a smartphone, the top device (pre-launch survey, Jan 2025)

I led the design work for the rebuild, reworking the navigation and information architecture, resource filtering, visuals and mobile support. The new site launched on WordPress in May 2025.

Process

The Problem

They love the content. They can't find it. In a pre-launch survey (Jan 2025), 70% of visitors would recommend CeMCOR, yet 47% rated how clearly information is presented 6 out of 10 or lower, and search was the top complaint.

41% were on a phone, where the old site was hard to use. Some couldn't find search on the mobile home page at all.

The Approach

Findability is the feature, on any screen. One navigation that switches between section anchors and audience-led categories, over a resource library reorganised for advanced filtering.

  • Mega menu: featured items plus section anchors, opening by audience or by resource category.

  • Filtering: resources by life phase, topic, audience, resource type and age group.

  • Mobile: the same journey works on a phone, from the home page through the menu into Resources.

Nothing fancy. The audience is looking for health support, so the design stays readable.

Everything reorganised

Legacy content was migrated and reclassified. Orphaned and separated categories were consolidated into five types: resources (74), Ask Us answers (54), glossary terms (408), profiles (41) and news items (68), each filterable.
